The Miracle Slam: Australian Open 2021

It was the slam that might not have happened! To think that there wouldn’t have been…

The weather

This year was meeker and milder in many forms, including the absence of those good ol’ heatstroke-range temperatures. But as per AO tradition, bugs dropped like… well, flies:

I was convinced that some players were too, their shrieks resembling that of murder. Some bugs/players survived and thrived, though, including Naomi Osaka - this year’s indestructible cockroach/butterfly whisperer:

The COVID-Safe Ways

The authorities enforced public health directives to ensure a safe event, and had a warrant on Sam Stosur for possession of weapons…

"Do you have a licence for those (fire)arms, Ms Stosur?"

The pre-recorded line calls were weird yet necessary, delivered with the grace of a Karen-esque dog trainer. I’m either crazy for Marija Čičak (likely) or I swear I heard her calls being used.

An impromptu lockdown offered the chance to play like no one was watching, as in not as good. Actually, seagulls attended so there were spectators after all.

"Stop, there's a condom on my racquet"

One commentator decided to pronounce players’ names (including Kudermetova’s) how she wanted to, rather than how they actually are.

Even the coaches had their… eye-catching moments:

and really creepy methods of coaching?!

Moments that just don’t happen anywhere else

Last but not least, the bogan moments, always despised but particularly appreciated with the rare sight of crowds: You know what does happen at many of the grand slams? Naomi Osaka wins - wowsers and congratulations yet again!

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies!

...and everyone else for that matter - I'm still here! Also, Ash Barty is still being the MVP no matter how little she played last year.

A wombat on a chopping board? As if our native animals haven't suffered enough over the last year!

Stay tuned for the AO lockdown-edition wrap-up.
